Scientific mission:

The department of paleobiology and organismal evolution is focused on

  • paleoecology, biogeography and evolutionary paleobiology of marine and terrestrial invertebrates and
  • reconstruction and temporal and spatial dynamic of species composition and diversity of Mesozoic and Cenozoic ecosystems.

Our research also explores processes that affect preservation of fossil remains with actuopaleontological approaches and develops methods that allow us to quantify the bias in the fossil record. Our research geographically covers the Alpide Belt with the Alps and the Carpathians but is also devoted to other regions in Europe, Africa, Asia, and America. One of the key topics is related to analyses of mass extinctions and massive environmental disturbances at the end of the Triassic, Jurassic and Paleocene. These three events led to significant changes in the composition and functioning of past ecosystems and left their fingerprint also in the Carpathians. We primarily use quantitative methods in analytical paleobiology, geochemical and geochronological methods, and morphometric and visualization methods.
